JAMES CAMERON'S Avatar is now the highest-earning film in the world, published figures have confirmed.
Twentieth Century Fox's sci-fi flick today surpassed Cameron's previous world record-holder Titanic to claim the all-time global box office crown.
Film data site Box Office Mojo shows that Avatar has grossed a staggering $1.859 billion in just under six weeks, beating Titanic's $1.843billion. The clamour for the 3D IMAX experience - with more expensive tickets - has undoubtedly contributed to the film's takings.
In third place in the all-time worldwide chart is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with $1.119billion, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with $1.066billion and then The Dark Knight with $1billion.
At present, Titanic still holds the USA box office record with a tally of $600million compared with Avatar's $555million.
